Martin DSS-2018 Custom Shop Special Edition #35

The NAMM special edition theme was light weight and heavy tone. A bold challenge for the Custom Shop luthiers which they won, of course! This baby delivers stellar results in both categories. 1.697 kg / 3.74lbs is extremely light for a D-model. Tonaly she is extreme too. She can do fast flatpicking without ever losing a note on the comfortable modified low oval neck with the Performace Taper. Strumming with complex chords is easy. Big sounds with tight bass and an enormous dynamic range from quiete to loud without every loosing control. The Slope Shouder model has been my all time favorite starting with the D-111. Not only because its the original Dreadnought shape. The curves are extremely good looking. Soundwise there is no difference except for the volume. Martin invented the square shoulder because it is supposed to give more volume. Not really but back in the days it was an issue. And what about the bridge pins: liquid metal. Out of this earth. They boost tone and sustain to a whole new level. Just listen to the sound samples. The Carbon Fibre details are a very neat stylish touch. Yes, they do reduce the weight but even more so, the carbon fibre tuners not only look great, they operate very smooth and precise. I guess Chris was inspired by Porsche in adding these details. Just like a Porsche this dread is a canon on the road and still a true classic head turner without ever being flashy. Incl Case
